Lately I’ve been getting calls asking about free shredding events so it’s time to update the information.

I’m pleased to announce a new round of free or low-cost shredding events from September through December in Southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey (Phillipsburg area) and Delaware.

But, no worries if you’re not nearby. To find events in any area, search online for your local shredding company(ies), go to their Web site and find the link for community shredding events.

Here’s a helpful tip to maintain YOUR shredder: Lubricate it to maintain proper functioning, keep cutting blades sharp and maximize its life. Click here (click on Oiling of Cross Cut Paper Shredders, then the link for Standard Oiling Method) to watch a video on how to lubricate a shredder by Fellowes, recognized as the premier manufacturer.  Be sure to refer to the owner’s manual’s instructions for YOUR machine.

After doing an Internet search, I found the best price of $7.99 for Fellowes Paper Shredder Oil, 12 ounces, at OfficeMax.com (some stores stock it). This product is for cross-cut and micro-cut shredders. Click here for more information or to order.

I recommend calling or visiting the Web site to be sure the event is still scheduled as planned. Be sure to check any limitations such as quantity or residency requirements. Note in your calendar the event you plan to attend and include a backup in case you miss the first one.

Sometimes you can bring hard drives, flash drives and disks for destruction.

If you can’t make any of the events, see if your local politicians offer them. Also, Staples and Office Max shred documents and guarantee confidentiality; Staples charges $.79/pound and Office Max charges $.99/pound. For a fee, you can bring papers to the shredding company’s location or have them come to your location.

Sort through your papers in files, piles, drawers and desk. Put all documents you no longer want in a box — no need to remove paper clips, staples or hanging file folders. When the day of the event arrives, you’ll be ready — just grab your box and go!
